What is a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon is, as the name indicates, a balloon, which is inserted into the stomach. They were originally invented to help to stop bleeding in these areas. However, nowadays when you see the term it usually refers to a balloon that is placed in the stomach to aid weight loss.

Every year, in the UK, many patients undergo this kind of weight loss treatment. It is an extremely simple and quick non-surgical procedure, which is very effective. It works by partially filling your stomach that has the effect of curbing your appetite. In addition, it slows down the pace at which somebody can comfortably eat.
Having a Gastric Balloon Inserted
The deflated balloon is inserted into your stomach via your mouth. In most cases, limited sedation is all that is needed. It is a pain-free procedure, but there will be some discomfort. Once the balloon is in the right position within your stomach it is filled to the right level with saline. In most cases, 70% of your stomach capacity is taken up by the gastric balloon. The whole procedure, including recovery, takes around two hours. Within 2 to 4 days, you will be completely back to normal. However, as your appetite decreases and you stay feeling fuller for longer, you are able to naturally eat less and lose weight.
